The 17 WSM is the fastest rimfire we carry. Here is the proof: the Winchester 20-grain V-Max load lists 3,000 fps at the muzzle. That puts 17 WSM ballistics in a class between the rimfire magnums and small centerfire rounds. The catch is that ammo choices are few. This guide shows what we stock, how to read the data, and where the 17 WSM fits.
What Is the 17 WSM?
WSM stands for Winchester Super Magnum. Winchester introduced the round in 2012. It is a rimfire cartridge, like the 17 HMR and 22 WMR, but it uses a larger, stronger case. That case lets it run at higher pressure and speed than any other common rimfire.
The 17 WSM only fits rifles chambered for it. It will not chamber in a 17 HMR or 22 WMR rifle, and those rounds don’t belong in a 17 WSM rifle.
17 WSM Ballistics: The Loads We Stock
| Load | Grain | Bullet | Velocity (fps) | Energy (ft-lb) | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varmint HV 20-grain | 20 | V-Max | 3,000 | 400 | 500-round case (10 x 50) |
| Varmint High Energy 25-grain | 25 | V-Max | 2,600 | 375 | 50-round box |
| Super X 25-grain | 25 | JHP | 2,600 | 375 | 500-round case (10 x 50) |
All three come from Winchester. Figures are Winchester’s published muzzle data from a rifle test barrel.
How to Read 17 WSM Ballistics
Velocity
The Winchester Varmint HV 20-grain V-Max lists 3,000 fps and 400 ft-lb. Speed like that means a flat path and less time for wind to act on the bullet. It is the load to pick for small targets at the longest rimfire ranges.
Energy
The two 25-grain loads list 2,600 fps and 375 ft-lb. They are slower, but the heavier bullet carries well. Energy is a rough guide to striking power. It does not tell you how the bullet behaves on impact.
Bullet Type
The V-Max polymer tip is built to break up quickly. The Varmint High Energy 25-grain V-Max gives that same fast expansion with more weight. The Super X 25-grain JHP is a jacketed hollow point. It tends to open slower and hold together better, which helps on larger pests.
17 WSM vs 17 HMR and 22 WMR
Here is how the fastest load in each rimfire magnum compares, using our catalog data:
- 17 WSM: Winchester Varmint HV 20-grain lists 3,000 fps and 400 ft-lb.
- 17 HMR: CCI VNT 17-grain lists 2,650 fps and 265 ft-lb.
- 22 WMR: Winchester Varmint HV 30-grain lists 2,250 fps and 337 ft-lb.
The 17 WSM leads in both speed and energy. The trade-off is cost and ammo choice. Our 17 HMR ballistic data guide and 22 WMR ballistic data guide cover those rounds in more detail.
What the 17 WSM Is Good For
Prairie Dogs and Ground Squirrels
This is a natural fit. The 20-grain V-Max reaches out further than a 17 HMR with less wind drift.
Foxes and Coyotes
The 25-grain loads give more weight for larger predators. Keep shots within reasonable range and wait for a good angle. The 17 WSM is still a small bullet.
Deer and Big Game
The 17 WSM is a varmint round. Many states do not allow rimfire for deer. Check your state’s hunting rules and use a proper centerfire cartridge for big game.
Why Is 17 WSM Ammo Hard to Find?
Fewer rifles are chambered for the 17 WSM than for the 17 HMR or 22 WMR. Fewer rifles means less demand, so fewer loads are made. Winchester is the main maker, and all three loads we carry are Winchester. When you find a load your rifle likes, it pays to buy a case. Two of our three loads come in 500-round cases.
Barrel Length and Conditions
Factory data comes from a test barrel. A shorter barrel will give you less speed. High altitude means thinner air and a bit less drag. Cold weather can drop speed a little. Light bullets are also sensitive to wind, so practice reading it. Confirm your zero in the conditions you hunt.
We don’t print drop charts, because they depend on your scope height, zero and conditions. Use a ballistic calculator with your rifle’s real data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 17 WSM ammo hard to find?
The 17 WSM has fewer rifles chambered for it than the 17 HMR or 22 WMR, so demand is lower and fewer loads are made. Winchester is the main maker. When you find a load your rifle likes, buying a 500-round case helps you avoid running short.
How fast is a 17 WSM?
In our stock, the Winchester Varmint HV 20-grain V-Max lists 3,000 fps and 400 ft-lb. The 25-grain V-Max and JHP loads list 2,600 fps and 375 ft-lb. That makes the 17 WSM the fastest rimfire we carry.
Is 17 WSM better than 17 HMR?
The 17 WSM is faster and hits harder. Its 20-grain load lists 3,000 fps, while the fastest 17 HMR load we stock lists 2,650 fps. The 17 HMR has far more ammo choices and costs less to shoot. Pick based on range and budget.
Is 17 WSM a rimfire cartridge?
Yes. The 17 WSM is a rimfire round, with the priming compound in the rim of the case. Winchester gave it a larger, stronger case than other rimfires, so it runs at higher pressure and speed. It fires only in rifles chambered for 17 WSM.
What is 17 WSM good for?
The 17 WSM suits prairie dogs, ground squirrels and other varmints at longer rimfire ranges. The 25-grain loads add weight for foxes and coyotes. It is not a deer round, and many states bar rimfire for big game, so check your state rules.
