30 Carbine Ballistics: Velocity, Energy and Test Barrels Explained

Pick up almost any box of 30 Carbine and you’ll see the same thing: a 110-grain bullet at nearly the same listed speed. That bullet weight was the military spec for the M1 Carbine, and most makers still follow it. So when you compare 30 Carbine ballistics, the real choice is often bullet type, not speed. This guide shows the published figures for each load we carry and explains where the differences are.

What Is a 30 Carbine?

The 30 Carbine was built for the U.S. M1 Carbine in the early 1940s. The Army wanted a light rifle for troops who did not need a full-size M1 Garand. The result was a short, light round that sits between a pistol cartridge and a rifle cartridge.

Is 30 Carbine a pistol round? No, it was made for a carbine. But a few handguns are chambered for it, such as some single-action revolvers. From a short barrel it gives up a lot of speed and makes a big blast.

Is 30-30 the same as 30 Carbine? No. The 30-30 Winchester is a much larger rimmed lever-gun round. The two are not interchangeable. See our 30-30 Winchester ballistic data guide for that one.

Buffalo Bore 125 Flat nose 2,100 1,224 20-round box

Most 110-grain loads list between 1,990 fps (Magtech Sport FMJ) and 2,024 fps (Sellier & Bellot FMJ). Energy for those standard loads runs from 965 foot-pounds (Aguila) to 1,001 foot-pounds (Sellier & Bellot). The hotter Buffalo Bore loads list 2,100 fps, and its 125 grain flat nose lists 1,224 ft-lb.

Why the Test Barrel Matters Here

With a small case like this, barrel length has a big effect. Makers test on different barrels, and that skews the box numbers.

  • Sellier & Bellot lists a 23.5-inch test barrel.
  • Magtech lists a 20-inch test barrel.
  • Hornady lists an 18-inch test barrel for Critical Defense 110 grain FTX, which posts 2,000 fps.
  • Winchester lists a 10-inch test barrel for its Super X 110 grain JHP, which posts 1,790 fps.

The M1 Carbine has an 18-inch barrel. So the Hornady figure is a fair guide for that rifle. Loads tested in longer barrels may run a bit slower in yours. A handgun will run much slower than any of these.

Reading Velocity and Energy

Velocity is the bullet’s speed at the muzzle. Energy is how much work it can do, in foot-pounds. Energy rises with the square of speed, so the faster Buffalo Bore loads gain a good chunk over standard loads.

The 30 Carbine’s light, round-nosed bullets lose speed quickly. That limits its range. Think of it as a 100 to 150-yard round at most. We don’t list drop figures here. Sight in and check your own drop at the range.

Choosing a Load by Use

Range and plinking

FMJ is the way to go. It feeds well in the M1 Carbine and costs less. Sellier & Bellot 110 grain FMJ in a 1,000-round case suits high-volume shooters.

Home defense

Many people keep an M1 Carbine for the home. Expanding bullets make more sense than FMJ for that job. Options include Hornady Critical Defense and the Underwood 85 grain Xtreme Cavitator, which lists 2,100 fps. Laws on defensive ammo and hollow points vary, so check your state and local rules.

Small game and hunting

Is 30 Carbine good for deer hunting? It is on the light side. Energy is similar to a hot handgun round. Some states set minimum energy or caliber rules for deer, and the 30 Carbine may not meet them. If it is legal where you hunt, use a soft point such as Remington Core-Lokt 110 grain, keep shots short and aim for clean hits.

Is 30 Carbine Ammo Hard to Find?

It can be. The 30 Carbine is a niche round now, and fewer factories run it than common rounds like 9mm or 5.56. When supplies get tight, it is often one of the first to vanish. Buying in bulk when it is in stock is the simple fix. That is why we carry case lots from Sellier & Bellot and Magtech, plus a 200-round Federal pack.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 30 Carbine?

The 30 Carbine is a small rifle cartridge made for the U.S. M1 Carbine in the early 1940s. It fires a .30 caliber bullet, usually 110 grains. It sits between a pistol round and a full rifle round in power.

What guns shoot 30 Carbine?

The M1 Carbine and its modern copies are the main ones. Some newer carbines and a few single-action revolvers are also chambered for it. Only use 30 Carbine in a gun stamped for it.

Is 30 Carbine good for deer hunting?

It is light for deer. Its energy is close to a hot handgun round. Some states have minimum rules that it may not meet, so check your state’s regulations. If it is legal, use a soft point and keep shots close.

Is 30-30 the same as 30 Carbine?

No. The 30-30 Winchester is a larger rimmed rifle cartridge used in lever actions. The 30 Carbine is a much smaller round made for the M1 Carbine. They are not interchangeable.

Why is 30 Carbine ammo so hard to find?

It is a niche round. Fewer factories make it, and they run it less often than common calibers. When demand jumps, it sells out fast. Buying in bulk when it is in stock helps you ride out the gaps.
