410 Self Defense Ammo: Buckshot, PDX1 and Less-Lethal Loads

Is a .410 shotgun good for home defense? It’s one of the most common questions at the gun counter. The honest answer: it can work, with the right load and enough practice, but it gives up a lot compared with a 20 or 12 gauge. What it offers is light recoil, light guns and revolvers that fire both .410 and .45 Colt. This guide walks through 410 self defense ammo, what’s in each shell, and how the loads we carry compare.

Pellet counts and velocities come from each maker’s published data. Self-defense laws vary by state and city, so check your local rules before you choose a home-defense setup.

Is a .410 good for home defense?

Here’s the trade-off in plain terms.

What the .410 does well

  • Low recoil. Smaller shooters and people with injuries can control it.
  • Light, handy guns. Many .410 shotguns are short and easy to move indoors.
  • Revolver option. Some revolvers chamber both .410 shells and .45 Colt.

What it gives up

  • Small payload. A .410 defense shell holds 3 to 5 buckshot pellets. A 2-3/4 inch 12 gauge 00 load often holds 8 or 9.
  • Lower speed from short barrels. Revolver-friendly loads list 750 to 850 fps.
  • Feeding. Some .410 pumps and semi-autos are picky with certain loads. Test first.

If recoil or gun weight rules out a bigger gauge, a .410 loaded with buckshot is a real option. Pick the load that runs in your gun and practice with it.

The four types of 410 self defense ammo

000 buckshot

Triple-aught pellets are about .36 inch across, the largest common buckshot. A 2-1/2 inch shell holds 4; a 3 inch shell holds 5. The Remington HD Ultimate 000 Buck lists 4 pellets at 1,225 fps. The Federal Personal Defense 2-1/2 inch 000 Buck lists 850 fps and the 3 inch version lists 775 fps with 5 pellets.

Disc-and-BB loads

Winchester’s PDX1 Defender stacks flat plated Defense Discs on top of BBs. The 2-1/2 inch PDX1 holds 3 discs and 12 BBs; the 3 inch PDX1 holds 4 discs. Both list 750 fps.

Slug plus balls

The Hornady Critical Defense Triple Defense loads an FTX polymer-tip slug plus two .35 caliber round balls, listed at 750 fps. Hornady lists it for rifled bores, so it suits .410 revolvers.

Less-lethal rubber

Lightfield makes rubber buckshot with 4 pellets per shell. Less lethal isn’t harmless. Rubber pellets can still cause serious injury.

Lethal .410 defense loads compared

Load Shell Projectile Pellets Velocity Pack
Remington Home Defense 410 HD Ultimate 000 Buck 2-1/2 in. #000 Buckshot 4 1,225 fps 15-round box
Federal Personal Defense 410 2 1/2 In. 000 Buck 2-1/2 in. #000 Buckshot 4 850 fps 20-round box
Federal Personal Defense 410 3 Inch 000 Buck 3 in. #000 Buckshot 5 775 fps 20-round box
Remington Ultimate Defense 410 3 in. 000 Buck 3 in. #000 Buckshot 5 1,125 fps 150-round case (10 x 15)
PDX1 410 Winchester Defender 2-1/2 in. 3 Discs + BB 2-1/2 in. 3 Defense Discs + BB copper-plated BBs 12 (plus 3 Defense Discs) 750 fps 10-round box
Winchester PDX1 410 3 Inch Defender 4 Discs + BB 3 in. 4 Defense Discs + BB copper-plated BBs — 750 fps 10-round box
Hornady Critical Defense 410 Triple Defense 2-1/2 in. 2-1/2 in. FTX Polymer Tip Slug + Two 35-Cal Round Balls — 750 fps 20-round box
Winchester PDX1 Combo Pack 410 and 45 Colt 2-1/2 in. 3 Defense Discs + BB Lead Shot (.410) with .45 Colt 12 not listed 20-round combo pack (10 x .410 + 10 x .45 Colt)

Notice the speed spread. Remington’s 3 inch Ultimate Defense 000 Buck lists 1,125 fps. Federal’s revolver-focused loads list 775 to 850 fps. A shotgun’s longer barrel usually adds speed over a revolver, but the box number is from the maker’s test barrel, not yours.

Less-lethal and blank .410 loads

Load Shell Projectile Pellets Velocity
410 Rubber Buckshot Lightfield Home Defender 2-1/2 in. 2-1/2 in. Rubber Buckshot (4 pellets) 4 1,400 fps
Lightfield Less Lethal Wildlife Control 410 Rubber Buckshot 2-1/2 in. Rubber Buckshot (4 pellets) 4 1,400 fps
410 Blanks Lightfield Home Defender Nova DR 2-1/2 in. 2-1/2 in. Blank (no projectile) — not listed

Rubber buckshot like the Lightfield Home Defender lists 1,400 fps with 4 rubber pellets. The Lightfield Nova DR blank has no projectile. Check local laws before using any less-lethal round.

Shotgun or revolver?

In a .410 shotgun, you get a longer sight radius, a shoulder stock and usually more speed from the longer barrel. In a .410 revolver, you get a compact gun but low speed and a heavy trigger. Revolvers that chamber .410 usually have rifled barrels, which spins the shot column and spreads patterns faster. If you shoot a revolver, pattern your load at indoor distances.

The Winchester PDX1 Combo Pack pairs .410 PDX1 shells with .45 Colt rounds for revolvers that take both.

How to pick and test a .410 defense load

  1. Confirm your chamber length: 2-1/2 or 3 inch.
  2. Buy two or three candidate loads.
  3. Pattern each at 7 to 15 yards on paper.
  4. Cycle a full magazine of each to check feeding.
  5. Keep the load that patterns tight and runs every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 410 shotgun good for home defense?

It can be. A .410 has light recoil and handy guns, which helps smaller or recoil-sensitive shooters. But it holds far fewer pellets than a 12 or 20 gauge. If you choose one, use a buckshot or disc load that feeds reliably in your gun, and practice at indoor distances.

What is the best 410 self defense ammo?

There’s no single best load. 000 buckshot puts 4 or 5 large pellets in each shell. Disc-and-BB loads like PDX1 and slug-plus-ball loads like Hornady Triple Defense are other choices. Pattern two or three loads in your own gun and keep the one that groups tight and feeds every time.

Is 410 good for self defense in a revolver?

A .410 revolver is compact, but loads are slow, around 750 to 850 fps for revolver-focused shells, and rifled barrels spread shot quickly. Some owners prefer the .45 Colt in the same revolver. If you use 410 self defense ammo in a revolver, pattern it at room distances first.

Is 410 a good home defense round compared to 12 gauge?

A 12 gauge carries much more payload, often 8 or 9 00 pellets versus 3 to 5 000 pellets in a .410. The .410 wins on recoil and gun weight. Choose the gauge you can shoot fast and accurately, and check your state and local laws on home defense.
