The 25 ACP is a vest-pocket round. The guns are tiny, the bullets weigh 35 to 60 grains, and the barrels are often around 2 inches long. If you own one, the load you feed it matters. Good 25 ACP ballistics start with knowing what each bullet type is trying to do.
This guide covers the 25 ACP loads Bulk Ammo Vault carries. It shows listed speed and energy, explains how to read them, and helps you choose between FMJ, hollow point and flat nose loads. All figures come from the linked product pages.
What Is the 25 ACP?
John Browning designed the 25 ACP in the early 1900s for very small pocket pistols. It’s also sold as 25 Auto and, in Europe, as 6.35mm Browning. All three names mean the same round, so a box marked 25 Auto fits a pistol marked 25 ACP.
The case is semi-rimmed and straight-walled. Bullets are about .25 inch wide. It was built for guns small enough to hide in a vest pocket, and that’s still where it lives.

| Buffalo Bore 25 ACP 60 Grain Hard Cast Flat Nose | Hard cast flat nose | 60 | 850 | 96 | 20-round box |
Two patterns stand out. Light 35 grain hollow points list the highest speed. The Speer Gold Dot 35 grain lists 900 fps. Heavy bullets post the most energy, led by the Buffalo Bore 60 grain hard cast at 850 fps and 96 ft-lbs.
How to Read These Numbers
Muzzle velocity tells you how fast the bullet leaves the barrel. Muzzle energy shows how much work it can do. In a round this small, energy figures are low across the board. The gaps between loads are still real, though.
Barrel length is the big variable
Makers often test in a barrel longer than the one on your pistol. A 2 inch barrel gives powder very little time to burn. Expect your real speed to land under the label, sometimes by a fair margin. A chronograph is the only way to know for sure.
Other factors
Cold weather can shave a bit of speed. Altitude does little at the muzzle. Lot-to-lot changes can move things a few dozen fps. None of these change the order of the table much.
Three Bullet Types, Three Goals
Full metal jacket
FMJ is the classic 25 ACP load. A 50 grain round nose bullet feeds well in older pistols and goes deep, but it doesn’t expand. It’s the go-to for practice. Winchester White Box 50 grain lists 760 fps and 64 ft-lbs. For bulk, the Remington UMC 500-round case lists 760 fps and 64 ft-lbs. Buffalo Bore Heavy 50 grain FMJ is a hotter version at 875 fps and 85 ft-lbs.
Hollow points and polymer tips
These use a light 35 grain bullet at higher speed so it has a chance to open. Speer Gold Dot 35 grain and Hornady Custom 35 grain XTP each list 900 fps and 63 ft-lbs. Hornady Critical Defense 35 grain FTX lists the same figures and adds a polymer tip to help it open. The trade-off is depth. A light bullet that opens may stop short.
Flat nose solids
Flat nose bullets don’t expand. They aim for depth and a wider wound path than a round nose. Federal Punch 45 grain uses a nickel-plated solid flat nose at 825 fps and 68 ft-lbs. The 60 grain Buffalo Bore hard cast load takes the same idea with a heavier bullet.
Is 25 ACP Good for Self Defense?
It is a very light round. It’s often seen as a backup choice, and bigger calibers give you more margin. Still, some people carry a 25 because it’s the gun they will actually have on them. If that’s you, a few rules help:
- Pick a load built for depth, like a flat nose solid or a heavier bullet.
- Shoot at least a few boxes of your carry load through your gun to check feeding.
- Practice at close range. Hits matter most with small rounds.
- Keep the gun clean. Tiny pistols can be fussy with fouling.
Self-defense and hollow point laws vary. Check your state and local rules.
25 ACP vs 22 LR
This comes up a lot. From a rifle, 22 LR is much faster. From a tiny pistol, the two are closer than you’d think. The 25 ACP has one key edge: it’s centerfire. Centerfire primers tend to fire more reliably than rimfire, which matters in a gun you might carry. The 22 LR wins on cost and choice of guns.
If you’re weighing a step up, see the 32 ACP ballistic data guide. It covers the next size up in Browning’s pocket rounds.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 25 ACP good for self defense?
It’s a light round with limited power, so many people see it as a backup choice. If you carry one, pick a load built for depth, test it in your gun, and practice. Self-defense and hollow point laws vary, so check your state and local rules.
Is 25 Auto the same as 25 ACP?
Yes. 25 Auto, 25 ACP and 6.35mm Browning are all names for the same cartridge. A box marked with any of these names will fit a pistol chambered for the 25 ACP. Always check the marking on your gun before you load it.
Is 25 ACP better than 22 LR?
It depends on the job. The 25 ACP is centerfire, which tends to fire more reliably than rimfire in a carry gun. The 22 LR is cheaper and fits many more guns. From a long rifle barrel, 22 LR is faster. From tiny pistols, the two are close.
Is 25 ACP lethal?
Yes. Any firearm cartridge can be lethal, including the 25 ACP. It carries far less energy than larger handgun rounds, though, so bullet choice and shot placement matter a great deal. Treat it, and every gun, with full respect.
