44 Special Ballistics: Load Data, Uses and Bullet Weights

Can a mild, old revolver round still earn a spot in your carry or trail gun? With the 44 Special, the answer is often yes. It pushes a big, heavy bullet at modest speed, with recoil most shooters can control. Its loads run from soft cowboy rounds, like the Grizzly Cowboy 200 grain at 700 fps, to stout hard cast trail loads.

This page lays out 44 Special ballistics for the loads Bulk Ammo Vault stocks. You’ll get a data table, a plain guide to velocity and energy, and help matching bullet weight to the job. All speed and energy figures come from the linked product listings.

Where the 44 Special Fits

Smith & Wesson brought out the 44 Special in 1907. It was a longer version of the 44 Russian. In 1955 the 44 Special became the parent of the 44 Magnum, which uses a longer case and much higher pressure.

Both rounds fire a bullet about .429 inch wide. That shared size is why the two are linked in so many guns. Today the 44 Special lives in compact five-shot revolvers, single actions, and as soft practice ammo for 44 Magnum owners.

Can You Shoot 44 Special in a 44 Magnum?

Yes. A 44 Magnum revolver can safely fire 44 Special. Some lever and semi-auto rifles won’t feed or cycle the shorter round, so check your gun maker’s manual. The shorter case sits a bit deeper in the chamber, but it works. Recoil and blast drop a lot. Many 44 Magnum owners use the Special for practice and new shooters.

The reverse is not safe. Never fire 44 Magnum in a gun marked only for 44 Special. The longer case is made that way on purpose, so it won’t chamber in most Special guns. Don’t force it.

One tip: after a lot of 44 Special, clean the chambers of a Magnum gun. Fouling can build a ring that makes longer Magnum cases hard to seat.

Reading the Numbers

Velocity is how fast the bullet leaves the muzzle. Energy is the work it can do at that moment. Bullet weight times speed squared drives energy, so faster loads post bigger energy figures even with light bullets.

Take two examples. Underwood Xtreme Defender 125 grain lists 1,250 fps and 434 ft-lbs. Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman 255 grain lists 1,000 fps and 566 ft-lbs. The heavy bullet carries more energy at slower speed. It will also kick harder and go deeper.

Why your gun may differ

Makers test in their own barrels. Many 44 Special revolvers have short barrels of 3 inches or less. Expect lower speed from those. A long single action or a carbine may beat the listed figure. Revolver gap, temperature and lot-to-lot changes also play a part. High altitude thins the air, which helps bullets hold speed downrange, but it barely changes muzzle speed.

Is 44 Special subsonic?

Many 44 Special loads are. The speed of sound is about 1,125 feet per second at sea level on a mild day. Most loads in our table list below that. A few lead-free and hot trail loads list above it, such as Buffalo Bore 190 grain soft cast HP at 1,150 fps and 560 ft-lbs.

Matching Bullet Weight to the Job

Practice and cowboy action

Lead flat nose and semi-wadcutter loads from 200 to 246 grains at modest speed work well. HSM Cowboy Action 200 grain lists 850 fps and 321 ft-lbs. Remington WheelGun 246 grain round nose lists 755 fps and 311 ft-lbs. Both come in 50-round boxes.

Personal defense

Short-barrel revolvers need bullets that open at lower speed. Look for loads built for that, like Hornady Critical Defense 165 grain FTX at 900 fps and 297 ft-lbs or the Speer Gold Dot 200 grain at 875 fps and 340 ft-lbs. Hollow point and self-defense laws vary. Check your state and local rules.

Trail and outdoors

For woods carry, heavier hard cast bullets go deep and hold together. Underwood 255 grain hard cast SWC lists 1,000 fps and 566 ft-lbs. Grizzly Bear Load 260 grain WFN lists 950 fps and 521 ft-lbs. Some heavy loads are made for strong modern guns only. Read the box before you load an older revolver.

Snakes and pests

Shotshells turn a revolver into a short-range pest gun. The CCI #9 shotshell and the CCI Big 4 #4 shotshell both list 1,000 fps. Shot loads don’t have an energy figure, so they aren’t in the table.

44 Special vs 357 Magnum and 45 Colt

People often ask if the 44 Special is more powerful than the 357 Magnum. With standard loads, not usually. The 357 Magnum pushes a lighter bullet much faster, so it posts more energy in most loads. The 44 Special uses a wider, heavier bullet at lower speed. Some hot Special loads close the gap, but only in guns built for them.

The 45 Colt is the closest match in size and spirit. See our 45 Long Colt ballistics guide to compare. For the bigger brother, read the 44 Magnum gel test guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you shoot 44 Special in a 44 Magnum revolver?

Yes. A 44 Magnum revolver can safely fire 44 Special, but some rifles won’t feed the shorter round. Check your gun maker’s manual. The case is shorter, so recoil and noise drop. Clean the chambers after a long session so fouling doesn’t block longer Magnum cases. Never fire 44 Magnum in a gun marked only for 44 Special.

Is 44 Special the same as 44 Mag?

No. They share a .429 inch bullet, but the 44 Magnum has a longer case and runs at much higher pressure. A Magnum gun can fire Special ammo. A gun built only for 44 Special cannot safely fire 44 Magnum.

Is 44 Special subsonic?

Many loads are. The speed of sound is roughly 1,125 feet per second at sea level, and most 44 Special loads list below that. Some hot or lightweight loads list above it, so check the velocity on each listing if you need a subsonic round.

Is 44 Special good for self defense?

It can be, with the right load. Look for hollow points designed to open at revolver speed, especially from short barrels. Recoil is easier to control than 44 Magnum, which helps with follow-up shots. Laws on self-defense and hollow points vary, so check your state and local rules.

Is 44 Special ammo hard to find?

It’s less common than 9mm or 38 Special, and some loads come and go. Brands like Hornady, Speer, Federal, Underwood, Buffalo Bore and several cowboy-load makers keep it in production. Stock changes often, so check each listing for current availability.
