The 45 Colt has been around since 1873, and it still does real work. It feeds cowboy action matches, rides in trail guns and lever rifles, and with the right load it will take deer, hogs and bigger game. That range is why 45 Long Colt ballistics can be confusing. A soft cowboy load and a hard +P bear load share a case name, and almost nothing else.
This guide sorts the loads Bulk Ammo Vault carries into clear groups. You’ll see listed muzzle velocity and energy, what those numbers mean, and which bullet weights fit which job. Every speed and energy figure comes from the product listing it’s linked to.
45 Colt or 45 Long Colt?
They are the same round. The official SAAMI name is 45 Colt. “Long Colt” is a nickname. It grew up to tell it apart from the shorter 45 Schofield, which the Army also used in the 1870s. Boxes, gun stamps and store listings use both names.
The 45 Colt is not the same as the 45 ACP. The ACP is a shorter, rimless pistol round. The Colt is a long, rimmed revolver round. They don’t swap, except in a few revolvers built to take both with moon clips or a second cylinder.
Modern 45 Colt bullets run about .452 inch wide. Weights in our catalog span from very light lead-free defense bullets up to 400 grain cast bear loads.
Three Pressure Levels, One Case
This is the most important thing to know before you read any table. The 45 Colt is loaded at very different pressures, and not every gun can take them all.
Standard and cowboy loads
These are mild, lead or jacketed flat nose loads. They are safe in any 45 Colt gun in good shape, including older single actions and replicas. Black Hills Cowboy Action 250 grain lists 725 fps and 292 ft-lbs. Aguila 200 grain flat nose lists 600 fps and 160 ft-lbs, one of the softest loads we carry.
Standard-pressure defense and hunting loads
These use hollow points or harder cast bullets at normal pressure. They hit harder than cowboy loads but stay within the standard limit. Winchester PDX1 225 grain bonded JHP lists 850 fps and 361 ft-lbs. Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman 255 grain lists 1,000 fps and 566 ft-lbs.
+P and heavy loads
These run well above standard pressure. They are made for large, modern revolvers and strong lever-action rifles. Never fire them in a Colt Single Action Army, a replica, or any gun whose maker doesn’t approve them. Read the box. Most heavy 45 Colt boxes spell out which guns can take them.
45 Long Colt Ballistics Table
Here is a cross-section of our loads, from soft to stout. Data comes from each listing.
| Load | Bullet | Grain | Muzzle velocity (fps) | Muzzle energy (ft-lbs) | Pack |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aguila 45 Colt 200 Grain Flat Nose | Flat Nose | 200 | 600 | 160 | 50-round box |
| Black Hills Cowboy Action 45 Colt 250 Grain Flat Nose | Flat Nose | 250 | 725 | 292 | 50-round box |
| Fiocchi Cowboy Action 45 Colt 250 Grain Flat Nose | Lead flat nose | 250 | 750 | 312 | 500-round case (10 x 50) |
| Federal American Eagle 45 Colt 225 Grain JSP | Jacketed Soft Point | 225 | 860 | 369 | 50-round box |
| Sellier and Bellot 45 Colt 230 Grain JHP | Jacketed Hollow Point | 230 | 830 | 352 | 50-round box |
| Winchester PDX1 45 Colt 225 Grain Bonded JHP | PDX1 bonded jacketed hollow point | 225 | 850 | 361 | 20-round box |
| Blazer 45 Colt 200 Grain JHP | Jacketed Hollow Point | 200 | 900 | 360 | 50-round box |
| Buffalo Bore Outdoorsman 45 Colt 255 Grain Semi-Wadcutter | Gas-checked lead semi-wadcutter | 255 | 1,000 | 566 | 20-round box |
| Hornady LEVERevolution 45 Colt 225 Grain FTX | Hornady FTX polymer tip | 225 | 950 | 460 | 20-round box |
| Federal HammerDown 45 Colt 250 Grain Bonded Soft Point | Bonded jacketed soft point | 250 | 1,400 | 1,088 | 20-round box |
| Underwood 45 Colt +P 250 Grain XTP JHP | Hornady XTP jacketed hollow point | 250 | 1,400 | 1,088 | 20-round box |
| HSM Bear 45 Colt +P 325 Grain Flat Nose | Flat Nose | 325 | 1,155 | 963 | 50-round box |
| Grizzly Bear Load 45 Colt 400 Grain +P Flat Nose | Cast Performance LBT flat nose, gas check | 400 | 1,100 | 1,062 | 20-round box |
Look at the spread. The mildest load in the table, the Aguila 200 grain flat nose, makes 160 ft-lbs. The Federal HammerDown 250 grain lists 1,400 fps and 1,088 ft-lbs, but HammerDown is built for lever-action rifles. That long barrel adds a lot of speed.
How to Read Velocity and Energy
Muzzle velocity is how fast the bullet leaves the barrel, in feet per second (fps). Muzzle energy is the force it carries at that point, in foot-pounds (ft-lbs). Energy comes from both weight and speed, but speed counts for more.
Two loads can show the same energy and act very differently. A light, fast bullet may open fast and stop short. A heavy, slower bullet often goes deeper and breaks more bone. Energy is a rough guide, not a ranking.
- Barrel length. Makers test with a set barrel. A 4.6 inch single action may fall short of the listed speed. A 20 inch lever gun may beat it.
- Gun type. Revolvers lose some gas at the gap between cylinder and barrel. Rifles don’t.
- Altitude and weather. Thin air at high elevation lowers drag, so bullets hold speed a little longer downrange. Cold can lower muzzle speed a bit. Neither changes the label figure much.
- Your gun. The only way to know your real speed is to shoot over a chronograph.
Picking a Bullet Weight by Job
Target and cowboy action
Pick 200 to 250 grain lead flat nose loads at mild speed. They’re easy on the hands, the gun and steel targets. Fiocchi Cowboy Action 250 grain comes in a 500-round case at 750 fps and 312 ft-lbs. Check your match rules on speed limits before you buy.
Home and personal defense
Look for hollow points made to open at revolver speeds. Hornady Critical Defense 185 grain FTX lists 920 fps and 348 ft-lbs. Federal Hydra-Shok Deep 210 grain lists 913 fps and 389 ft-lbs. For a lead-free choice, Underwood Xtreme Defender 135 grain lists 1,410 fps and 596 ft-lbs. Self-defense and hollow point laws vary, so check your state and local rules.
Deer and hogs
Choose 225 to 260 grain bullets that hold together. Bonded, solid copper and hard cast bullets fit here. Buffalo Bore 225 grain Barnes XPB is solid copper at 1,000 fps and 499 ft-lbs. In a strong gun, Buffalo Bore Deer Grenade +P 260 grain lists 1,500 fps and 1,299 ft-lbs. Some states set caliber or energy rules for handgun hunting. Check yours before the season.
Elk, bear and big game
Go heavy and hard. Use 300 grain and up, with a wide flat nose or a solid bullet that won’t come apart. Buffalo Bore Dangerous Game +P 300 grain lists 1,300 fps and 1,101 ft-lbs. Underwood +P 325 grain hard cast lists 1,325 fps and 1,267 ft-lbs. These are +P loads. Use them only in guns rated for them.
Snakes and pests
Shotshells fill the cylinder with small shot for close work. The CCI 45 Colt #9 shotshell is a common pick for snakes on the trail. Shot loads don’t post an energy figure, so they’re left out of the table.
Revolver or Lever Gun?
Many 45 Colt fans own both. Lever-action rifles add speed and make the round reach farther. Tube magazines stack bullets nose to primer, so flat nose or soft polymer tips are the safe choice. Hornady LEVERevolution 225 grain FTX lists 950 fps and 460 ft-lbs and was built with that in mind.
Some revolvers that fire .410 shotshells also take 45 Colt. In those long cylinders, speeds often fall below the listed figure. Pick loads made for short or rough-throated guns if you shoot one of these.
For a similar big-bore revolver round, see our 44 Special ballistic data guide. If you want to step up, the 44 Magnum gel test guide covers the next level of power.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 45 Colt the same as 45 Long Colt?
Yes. The official SAAMI name is 45 Colt, and Long Colt is a common nickname. It started as a way to tell it apart from the shorter 45 Schofield. Ammo marked either way fits any gun chambered for 45 Colt, as long as the pressure level suits the gun.
Is 45 Colt the same as 45 ACP?
No. The 45 Colt is a long, rimmed revolver cartridge from 1873. The 45 ACP is a shorter, rimless pistol round from the early 1900s. Both fire a bullet about .45 inch wide, but they are not interchangeable except in a few revolvers built for both.
What is the difference between 45 Colt and 45 Colt +P?
Standard 45 Colt is loaded to a pressure safe for older and replica guns. +P loads run much higher pressure for more speed and energy. Use +P only in modern, strong revolvers or lever rifles whose maker approves them. Never fire +P in a Colt Single Action Army or a replica.
What is the best 45 Long Colt rifle load?
There’s no single best load. For deer from a lever gun, pick a 225 to 260 grain bullet that holds together, with a flat nose or soft polymer tip for tube magazine safety. Check the gun maker’s pressure rating before using any heavy or +P load.
When did the 45 Colt come out?
The 45 Colt came out in 1873 with the Colt Single Action Army revolver. The U.S. Army adopted that revolver, and the round became a fixture of the Old West. Today it serves cowboy action shooters, handgun hunters and lever-action rifle owners.
