7mm Mauser Ballistics: 7×57 Load Data and Comparison

The 7mm Mauser, also known as the 7×57, is one of the oldest smokeless rifle rounds still in production. It has a long hunting record, and its gentle recoil keeps it popular with people who shoot old rifles. This guide covers 7mm Mauser ballistics for the load we stock, explains how to read factory data, and shows how the round compares to the 7mm-08 and the 8mm Mauser.

A Short History of the 7×57

Mauser designed the 7×57 in 1892. Spain adopted it the next year, and many other countries followed, especially in Latin America. In Britain the same round was sold as the .275 Rigby. It fires a .284-inch bullet, the same diameter as the 7mm-08 and 7mm Rem Mag.

Because so many old military and sporting rifles chamber it, US factory loads are kept at modest pressure. That keeps them safe in older actions.

Is the 7×57 the same as the 7mm Mauser?

Yes. 7×57, 7x57mm Mauser, 7mm Mauser and .275 Rigby all name the same round.

Is the 7×57 the same as the 8mm Mauser?

No. The 8mm Mauser, or 8×57 JS, fires a larger .323-inch bullet. Both cases are 57mm long, but they are not interchangeable. Firing the wrong one can wreck a rifle and hurt you. Check the barrel stamp every time.

7mm Mauser Ballistics: The Load We Carry

We currently stock one 7mm Mauser load in our 7mm Mauser ammo section.

Load Bullet Grain Muzzle velocity (fps) Muzzle energy (ft-lbs) Pack
PPU 7mm Mauser 139 Grain Soft Point 7×57 Jacketed Soft Point 139 2,657 2,175 20-round box

The PPU 7mm Mauser 139 grain soft point lists 2,657 fps and 2,175 ft-lbs. That is a mild, practical deer load. A 139 grain soft point opens well on deer-sized game at normal ranges.

How It Compares to the 7mm-08 and 8mm Mauser

The 7mm-08 fires the same bullet from a shorter, modern case at higher pressure. The 8mm Mauser fires a heavier, wider bullet. Here is a side-by-side look using loads from our catalog.

Load Bullet Grain Muzzle velocity (fps) Muzzle energy (ft-lbs) Pack
PPU 7mm Mauser 139 Grain Soft Point 7×57 Jacketed Soft Point 139 2,657 2,175 20-round box

Hornady Superformance 7mm-08 139 Grain SST Hornady SST Polymer Tip 139 2,950 2,686 20-round box
Nosler Ballistic Tip 8mm Mauser 180 Grain Custom Nosler Ballistic Tip Polymer Tip 180 2,600 2,702 20-round box
Norma Whitetail 8mm Mauser 196 Grain Soft Point Jacketed Soft Point 196 2,525 2,775 20-round box
Hornady Vintage Match 8mm Mauser 196 Grain BTHP Jacketed Hollow Point 196 2,500 2,720 20-round box

A few points stand out. The Hornady American Whitetail 7mm-08 139 grain lists 2,840 fps and 2,489 ft-lbs, a bit faster than the PPU 7×57 load with the same weight bullet. The Norma Whitetail 8mm Mauser 196 grain lists 2,525 fps and 2,775 ft-lbs. It is slower but carries more energy from its heavier bullet.

Reading the Factory Numbers

  • Velocity is the bullet’s speed at the muzzle in feet per second. It sets how flat the bullet flies early on.
  • Energy is foot-pounds from speed and weight. It is a tool for comparing loads, not a promise of results on game.
  • Test barrels differ from your rifle. Many old Mausers have long barrels and may beat the box. Short sporters may fall behind it.
  • Altitude and temperature shift the path. Thin, warm air flattens it. Cold air does the reverse.

Since we can’t print drop numbers that fit every rifle, chronograph your own load and use a ballistic app.

What the 7mm Mauser Is Good For

Deer, pronghorn and black bear at normal ranges are its strengths. With a tough bullet and careful shot choice, hunters have used it on larger game for over a century. Check your state’s rules on cartridges and bullets for big game.

If you shoot an old rifle, have a gunsmith check it first. Headspace, bore condition and action wear all matter more than any ballistics chart.

Bullet choice for old rifles

Many 7×57 rifles are old military actions with worn bores. A mid-weight soft point, like the 139 grain load we carry, is a sensible place to start. If your rifle groups poorly, have the bore checked and try another load before you give up on it. Keep notes on what works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7×57 the same as 7mm Mauser?

Yes. The 7×57, 7x57mm Mauser and 7mm Mauser are names for the same cartridge. The 7 is the bullet size in millimeters and the 57 is the case length. Ammo marked any of these ways will fit a rifle chambered for the 7×57.

Is 275 Rigby the same as 7×57 Mauser?

Yes. The .275 Rigby is the British name for the 7×57 Mauser. Rigby sold rifles in this chambering under its own name. Ammo marked .275 Rigby and ammo marked 7×57 are the same round. Always confirm the barrel stamp before you load a rifle.

Is 7×57 the same as 8mm Mauser?

No. The 8mm Mauser, or 8×57 JS, fires a .323-inch bullet, while the 7×57 fires a .284-inch bullet. The cases share a length but are not interchangeable. Firing the wrong round can destroy the rifle and injure you.

Why is 7mm Mauser so expensive?

Fewer makers load it, and they run smaller batches than for common rounds like the .308 or .30-06. Smaller runs cost more per box. Stock also comes and goes. When you find a load your rifle likes, buy enough of one lot to last a season.
