Aguila 22LR Ammo Guide: Super Extra, Interceptor, Colibri and More

Aguila 22LR ammo shows up in a lot of range bags, and for good reason. It is affordable, it comes in big bulk packs, and the lineup runs from whisper-quiet to very fast. Aguila also makes a few odd loads you will not find from other brands. This guide walks through each Aguila 22LR line we carry, with published speed data, so you can pick the right one.

Where Is Aguila Ammo Made?

Aguila ammo is made in Mexico. The brand sells a full range of rimfire and centerfire ammo in the US. Its rimfire line is the part most American shooters know best.

Is Aguila Ammo Good?

That depends on what you need. Aguila’s bulk loads are built for plinking and practice, and they work well for that. Like any rimfire brand, results vary from gun to gun. Some rifles group a certain load tight, and others don’t. The best way to judge is to buy a box, run it through your gun, and check both function and groups.

The Aguila 22LR Lines We Carry

Super Extra High Velocity

This is Aguila’s main bulk line. The Super Extra 40-grain plated round nose lists 1,255 fps and 140 ft-lb. The Super Extra 38-grain hollow point lists 1,280 fps. Both come in 500-round bulk packs and 2,000-round cases. They run well in most semi-autos and suit plinking and small game.

Interceptor

Interceptor keeps a full 40-grain bullet but pushes it faster. The Interceptor 40-grain hollow point lists 1,470 fps and 192 ft-lb. It is a good pick for small game and pests at rimfire range.

Supermaximum

Supermaximum uses a light 30-grain bullet at high speed. The Supermaximum 30-grain round nose lists 1,700 fps and 193 ft-lb. That is the fastest Aguila 22LR load we stock.

Target and Standard Velocity

These loads run slower for better accuracy at the range. The Target 40-grain lists 1,080 fps. The Standard Velocity 40-grain lists 1,130 fps.

Subsonic and Sniper Subsonic

Subsonic loads stay below the speed of sound. That removes the sharp crack and makes them a good match for a suppressor. The Subsonic 40-grain round nose lists 1,025 fps. The Sniper Subsonic 60-grain uses an extra-long bullet and lists 950 fps and 120 ft-lb. That 60-grain bullet is far heavier than a normal 22LR bullet. Test it in your gun first, since not every rifle handles it well.

Colibri and Super Colibri

These are Aguila’s quietest rounds. The Colibri has no powder. The primer alone drives a 20-grain bullet. The Aguila Colibri 20-grain lists 420 fps. It will not cycle a semi-auto. In a long rifle barrel, a bullet can stop inside the bore. After every shot, make sure the bullet left the barrel before you fire again. These loads suit short-range pest control and indoor practice where your range allows it.

How to Choose the Right Aguila 22LR Load

  • Plinking and bulk practice: Super Extra round nose in 500 or 2,000-round packs.
  • Squirrels and rabbits: Super Extra hollow point or Interceptor.
  • Longer rimfire shots on pests: Interceptor or Supermaximum.
  • Suppressed shooting: Subsonic round nose or hollow point.
  • Backyard pests and indoor practice: Colibri or Super Colibri, at very short range only.

Semi-auto owners should note that slow loads may not cycle the action. High velocity loads are the safe bet for reliable function. Bolt guns, lever guns and revolvers will handle any of these.

Always know what is behind your target. A 22LR bullet can travel well over a mile. Check your state’s hunting rules before you take any game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Aguila ammo good?

Aguila makes reliable, affordable rimfire ammo that works well for plinking, practice and small game. Like any brand, accuracy and function vary by gun. Buy a box or two, test them in your firearm, and stock up on the load that runs and groups best.

Where is Aguila ammo made?

Aguila ammunition is made in Mexico. The brand sells rimfire and centerfire ammo in the US. Its 22LR line includes bulk Super Extra loads, fast Interceptor and Supermaximum rounds, subsonic options, and the unusual primer-powered Colibri.

Will Aguila Colibri cycle a semi-auto?

No. The Colibri has no powder, so it does not make enough force to cycle a semi-auto action. You must work the action by hand. In long rifle barrels the bullet can lodge in the bore, so confirm it left the barrel before the next shot.

What is the fastest Aguila 22LR ammo?

In our stock, the Aguila Supermaximum 30-grain round nose lists 1,700 fps, the fastest Aguila 22LR load we carry. The Interceptor 40-grain lists 1,470 fps and keeps a heavier bullet for small game.

Is 22LR good for home defense?

A 22LR is light on power, and most trainers suggest a centerfire gun for home defense if you can handle one. If a 22 is what you can shoot well, choose a reliable high velocity load and practice. Check your state and local laws.
