Blazer 9mm Ammo Guide: Brass vs Aluminum and Which Grain

Blazer 9mm ammo has one job: put a lot of rounds downrange without fuss. It’s plain FMJ practice ammo, sold mostly in 1,000-round cases, with non-corrosive primers and either brass or aluminum cases. If you’re trying to decide between Blazer Brass and Blazer Aluminum, or which bullet weight to buy, this guide covers it. Every speed and energy figure comes from the product page linked beside it.

Who Makes Blazer?

Blazer is a CCI brand, and CCI is part of the same company family as Federal and Speer. Blazer ammo is made in Lewiston, Idaho. Our Blazer 9mm listings show the United States as the country of origin.

The brand built its name on low-cost range ammo. That’s still what it does best.

Blazer Brass vs Blazer Aluminum

This is the big choice with Blazer. Both use FMJ bullets and non-corrosive primers. The case is what changes.

Blazer Brass Blazer Aluminum
Case material Brass Aluminum
Reloadable Yes, uses standard primers No
Weight per case of ammo Heavier Lighter
Weights we stock 100, 115, 124, 147 grain 115 grain
Good for Range use, reloaders, brass collectors Range use when you leave your brass behind

If you reload, buy Blazer Brass and keep your cases. If you don’t, Blazer Aluminum does the same job at the range. Aluminum cases can’t be reloaded, so leave them in the scrap bin, not the reloading bucket.

The Blazer 115 grain JHP doesn’t list velocity in its product data, so it shows n/a above.

100 grain: light and snappy

Blazer Brass 100 grain FMJ lists 1,130 fps and 284 ft-lbs. Light bullets produce a quick, snappy recoil. Some shooters like it for fast drills. It’s less common than the standard weights.

115 grain: the standard practice round

115 grain is the most common 9mm practice weight. Blazer Brass 115 grain and Blazer Aluminum 115 grain both list 1,145 fps and 335 ft-lbs. The brass load comes in 50-round boxes. The aluminum load ships in a 1,000-round case.

124 grain: closer to many carry loads

Blazer Brass 124 grain lists 1,090 fps and 327 ft-lbs. If you carry a 124 grain hollow point, this weight gives you similar recoil in practice.

147 grain: soft-pushing and subsonic

Blazer Brass 147 grain lists 950 fps and 295 ft-lbs from a 4 inch test barrel. That’s under the speed of sound, so it pairs well with a suppressor. Many shooters also find 147 grain feels softer, more of a push than a snap. See our subsonic 9mm ammo guide for more.

Is Blazer 9mm Ammo Good?

For practice, yes, for most shooters. It’s made to a budget, so don’t expect match-grade accuracy. You may see a bit more smoke or a slightly dirtier gun than with some pricier loads. But it runs in most 9mm pistols and carbines, and that’s what range ammo needs to do.

A few tips:

  • Test first. Shoot a box or two in your gun before you buy a full case.
  • Clean on a schedule. Budget ammo can leave more fouling. Clean every few hundred rounds.
  • Don’t carry it. FMJ is for practice. For carry or home defense, use a hollow point built for that job.

How Blazer Compares to Other Range Ammo

Blazer sits in the same lane as other brass-cased range ammo. If you want to compare, Federal American Eagle 115 grain lists 1,160 fps and 344 ft-lbs, and Winchester White Box 115 grain lists 1,190 fps and 362 ft-lbs. All three are close in speed. Pick based on what your gun likes and what pack size fits your plans.

For a deeper look at those brands, read our Federal 9mm ammo guide and Winchester 9mm ammo guide.

Buying in Bulk

Most Blazer 9mm we stock comes in 1,000-round cases packed as 20 boxes of 50. That makes it easy to split up, store and carry to the range a box at a time. Keep ammo in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture. Sealed ammo cans with a desiccant pack help.

Federal law sets a minimum age of 21 to buy handgun ammo like 9mm from a licensed dealer, and some states add their own rules. Check your state and local laws before you order.
