Federal 9mm ammo falls into three families. There’s brass-cased FMJ for the range, polymer-coated Syntech for training, and Premium Personal Defense for carry. Once you know which family you need, picking a box gets easy. This guide walks through the Federal 9mm lines we carry, with bullet weight and the velocity and energy listed on each product page.
Federal Premium is a Minnesota-based maker, and it loads 9mm for everyone from new shooters to police agencies. Here’s how its lines break down.
Family One: American Eagle and Champion Range Ammo
These are Federal’s classic range loads. Brass cases, FMJ bullets, non-corrosive primers. They run in nearly any 9mm pistol or carbine.
- American Eagle 115 grain FMJ lists 1,160 fps and 344 ft-lbs and ships in a 1,000-round case.
- American Eagle 124 grain FMJ lists 1,150 fps and 364 ft-lbs, also in a 1,000-round case.
- American Eagle 124 grain TMJ uses a total metal jacket that covers the base of the bullet, which cuts lead exposure at indoor ranges. It lists 1,120 fps and 345 ft-lbs.
- Champion 115 grain FMJ is Federal’s value line at 1,125 fps and 323 ft-lbs, sold in 500-round bulk packs.
For most shooters, American Eagle 115 or 124 grain is the default practice round.
Family Two: Syntech Training Ammo
Syntech swaps the copper jacket for a polymer coat Federal calls a Total Synthetic Jacket. Federal designed it to reduce barrel fouling and keep metal-on-metal contact down. It’s a good fit for high-volume training and for shooting steel at the right distances.
Which Syntech?
- Syntech Range 124 grain is the everyday version at 1,050 fps and 304 ft-lbs.
- Syntech Training Match 124 grain and Training Match 147 grain are built to match the recoil and point of impact of Federal’s HST carry loads.
- Syntech PCC 130 grain is tuned for pistol caliber carbines at 1,140 fps and 375 ft-lbs.
- Syntech 150 grain is a heavy, slow load at 890 fps and 264 ft-lbs, below the speed of sound.
Syntech also has two defense loads. Syntech Defense 138 grain uses a segmenting hollow point at 1,050 fps and 338 ft-lbs. Syntech Solid Core 147 grain +P uses a hard lead core flat nose at 1,120 fps and 409 ft-lbs.
