Hornady 9mm Ammo Guide: Critical Defense, Duty and XTP

Here’s the first thing to know about Hornady 9mm ammo: every load we stock is a hollow point. Hornady isn’t the brand you buy by the thousand for plinking. It’s the brand you pick for carry, home defense, suppressed shooting or hunting. This guide covers each Hornady 9mm line in our range, what it’s for, and what speed and energy each product page lists.

Hornady is based in Grand Island, Nebraska, and it is also a major bullet maker. Many of its loads use bullet designs you’ll see in other brands’ boxes too, like the XTP.

Critical Defense: Built for Civilian Carry

Critical Defense uses Hornady’s FTX bullet, a hollow point with a soft red polymer tip. The tip fills the cavity so fabric can’t plug it. That helps the bullet open after it passes through clothing. The line is tuned for the shorter barrels common in carry pistols.

Critical Duty: Built for Barriers

Critical Duty uses the FlexLock bullet. It also has a polymer tip, but it adds a locked jacket and core for deeper travel through hard barriers like auto glass and car doors. Hornady built it with law enforcement testing in mind.

Critical Defense or Critical Duty?

Think of it this way. Critical Defense focuses on reliable expansion from short barrels through clothing. Critical Duty focuses on depth after hard barriers. For most civilian carry, Critical Defense fits the job. If you want extra depth or carry a full-size pistol, look at Critical Duty.

XTP Loads: American Gunner and Custom

The XTP is a classic jacketed hollow point designed for controlled expansion. Hornady loads it in two lines.

American Gunner is the lower-cost line. Custom is Hornady’s long-running standard XTP load. Both work for defense, and the XTP’s controlled expansion also suits small game where handgun hunting is legal.

Specialty Loads

Subsonic

Hornady Subsonic 147 grain XTP lists 975 fps and 310 ft-lbs. That keeps it under the speed of sound, so a suppressed pistol skips the supersonic crack. Read more in our subsonic 9mm ammo guide.

Handgun Hunter

Handgun Hunter 115 grain +P uses the MonoFlex, a solid copper hollow point with a flexible tip. It lists 1,100 fps and 309 ft-lbs. Solid copper bullets don’t shed a jacket, so they tend to hold their weight.

Backcountry Defense

Backcountry Defense 138 grain +P uses Hornady’s DGH bullet, short for Dangerous Game Handgun. It lists 1,150 fps and 405 ft-lbs and is built for deep travel on animals in the field rather than wide expansion.

How to Choose

Use these quick rules to match Hornady 9mm ammo to your gun and your plans.

  1. Carry pistol under 4 inches? Start with Critical Defense 115 grain. If recoil bothers you, try Critical Defense Lite.
  2. Full-size pistol or worried about barriers? Try Critical Duty 135 grain.
  3. Want a classic hollow point at a lower cost? Pick American Gunner.
  4. Shooting suppressed? Hornady Subsonic 147 grain.
  5. Hiking or hunting where handguns are legal? Look at Backcountry Defense or Handgun Hunter, and check your state’s hunting rules first.

For practice, pair Hornady with FMJ of the same weight. If you carry Critical Defense 115 grain, train with Blazer Brass 115 grain FMJ or Winchester White Box 115 grain. If you carry 147 grain, try Winchester White Box 147 grain.

Laws on carry and hollow points vary. Check your state and local rules before you buy or carry. To understand how defense loads are tested, see our 9mm ballistic gel test results guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hornady ammo good?

Hornady has a strong name for defense and hunting ammo, and it designs its own bullets, like the FTX, FlexLock and XTP. Its 9mm loads we stock are all hollow points made for carry, duty, suppressed shooting or hunting. Test any load in your own gun before you carry it.

What is the difference between Critical Defense and Critical Duty?

Critical Defense is tuned for civilian carry, with a polymer-tipped FTX bullet that opens from short barrels after clothing. Critical Duty uses the FlexLock bullet, built for depth after hard barriers like auto glass. Most civilian carriers start with Critical Defense.

Is Hornady Critical Defense good for self defense?

It was built for that job. The soft polymer tip keeps clothing out of the hollow point so it can still open. We list 115 grain and 100 grain Lite versions. Confirm it feeds in your pistol, and check your state and local rules on hollow points.

Does Hornady make 9mm FMJ ammo?

None of the Hornady 9mm loads we stock are FMJ. They are all hollow points. For practice, pair your Hornady carry load with FMJ of the same bullet weight from another brand, so recoil and point of impact feel the same.
