Remington’s .410 shelf is small but covers a lot of ground. There’s a skeet shell, a sporting clays shell, a very quiet low-noise load, two field loads, a bismuth load, a TSS turkey load and two 000 buckshot defense loads. If you shoot a Remington-loaded .410, or just want to know which shell fits your plans, this guide lays out each option. All specs come from Remington’s published data for the Remington 410 loads we carry.

Shell length matters. The 3 inch loads need a 3 inch chamber. The 2-1/2 inch loads work in either.
Target loads: STS and Nitro Gold
The Premier STS Target #9 is Remington’s skeet shell: 1/2 oz of #9 at 1,200 fps. Small #9 shot fills the pattern for close skeet targets. The Nitro Gold Sporting Clays #8 moves faster, at 1,300 fps, for longer sporting clays stations, and Remington also lists it for small game. Both come in 250-round cases, which suits a season of practice.
Low Decibel: a quiet .410 load
The Remington Low Decibel #9 is unusual. It lists just 650 fps with 1/2 oz of #9 shot. That slow speed means a softer report and very light recoil. It’s handy for pest control around barns and backyards where noise is a concern, and for teaching new shooters who flinch at the bang. It is still a firearm. Wear hearing and eye protection, and follow local rules on discharging a gun near buildings.
Low speed also means short range. Keep shots close, and check that your gun cycles it if you shoot a pump or semi-auto.
Field loads: Game Load and Express Extra Long Range
- Game Load #6: 1/2 oz at 1,200 fps in a 2-1/2 inch shell. A budget squirrel and dove load.
- Express Extra Long Range #6: 11/16 oz at 1,135 fps in a 3 inch shell. The bigger payload gives a fuller pattern for rabbits and squirrels.
Bismuth and TSS
For non-toxic hunting, the Premier Hevi-Bismuth #4 carries 9/16 oz at 1,350 fps. Bismuth is denser than steel, so it carries more energy per pellet, and it’s often chosen for older guns. Check your gun maker’s guidance. For turkey, the Premier TSS Turkey #9 packs 13/16 oz of tungsten super shot at 1,050 fps. Pattern it through a TSS-rated choke. Our .410 turkey loads guide compares it with other brands.
Federal rules require non-toxic shot for waterfowl. Turkey rules on gauge and shot vary by state.
Defense: HD Ultimate and Ultimate Defense 000 Buck
Remington loads #000 buckshot, the largest common buckshot size, in two .410 defense shells:
- HD Ultimate Home Defense: 2-1/2 inch, 4 pellets, 1,225 fps, in a 15-round box.
- Ultimate Defense 3 inch: 5 pellets, 1,125 fps, in a 150-round case.
The 150-round case lets you practice with the same load you keep for defense. That matters. Practice with the real load tells you how it patterns and feeds. Self-defense laws vary by state and city, so check your local rules. For more, see our .410 self defense ammo guide.
